Kool-Stop International Inc. was started back in 1978, in Oregon USA. While making friction components for industrial applications, the owner Richard Everett, began supplying a few compounds to the bicycle industry. After creating the first bicycle brake pad that had an internal frame and an air cooled heat sink, the small garage based company started to build a name for itself. The international growth of the Kool-Stop name has carved out a niche in the market for quality brake pads in all areas of the cycling industry.
Kool-Stop Europe, the European office, is based in the Netherlands and carries a large stock of all models of brake pads and disc brake pads. Stock is flown in every week and distributors receive their orders within 2 to 4 days after placing them.
Kool-Stop has even established itself in the virtual world Second Life. On an island we created Kool-Stop country. Here you can ride MTBs and racing bicycles on a tricky mountain trail and a road race circuit.
Kool-Stop disc pads are made with organic materials that are blended and bound together using a resin. The compounds do include small amounts of metal to improve the braking formula but though this is a mined material the pads are largely organic. The term semi metallic can also be used. We have found during testing that our disc pads are Rotor Friendly and provide high performance braking throughout the life of the pad. Our Kool-Stop disc pads using the aluminum back plates are made with the same organic compound. The weight per pair is around 10 grams.
Kool-Stop sintered metal disc brake pads are designed to give your bike performance braking in extreme conditions, e.g. XC, downhill, trials and dual slalom riding. Our pads have a quick break-in period so you get maximum performance during those demanding rides when stopping power, durability and long pad life are required. Sintered metal compounds have a higher resistance to brake fluid contamination and should not be used on Ceradure® ceramic rotors or in closed hydraulic systems.
By controlling all of the ingredients in the rubber compound and by milling all of the rubber in their own factory, Kool-Stop is able to constantly improve the quality of their brake pads and maintain rim friendliness.
New models that fit the demands of the market are introduced regularly and compounds suitable for different rims are developed (aluminium, carbon, ceramic, etc.).
